After posting my hometown design I did on a whim, I had people in my inbox asking what programs I use, techniques, etc.

Well here you go!

Keep in mind I've experimented with many different devices and applications. Currently, I create illustrations using my iPad Pro, Apple pencil (gen 2) and the Procreate app.

1.) YOU NEED TO STUDY ANATOMY

You can't bypass this one. Studying human anatomy is so important when drawing anything. Stan Prokopenko is an artist that offers both paid and free tutorials on how to master basic human anatomy. Yes. I know you know humans have two eyes and a nose. Did you know that each nostril is slightly different from another? How about the patterns in the irises (aka the beautiful coloring of your eyeballs order to create more diverse pieces, you must learn. Even if you plan on only illustrating more of a "cartoony" type of drawing. Take the time and DO IT.

2.) DEVELOP A STYLE

No don't copy the same borderline AI looking booboo everyone else is doing. Get INSPIRED. Next time you're in the book aisle, browse through the kids books. Take notice how different each artist is. Some books are detailed, some are not. Some may be more realistic than others, and some may be more abstract. Which one of these styles appeals to you? Do not intentionally copy someone else's style. A good way to find your style, is to draw the same subject multiple times in different ways. Whichever way resonates with you the most, adapt to that and grow into it. Experiment. Try new things. I know. It's scary to go outside of your comfort zone. I GET IT.  You have got to break out of your comfort zone.

3.) INVEST IN YOURSELF

You don't need Copics or the latest iPad to make good stuff. However, you can't fully cheap out on yourself either. Amazon has many dupes to choose from that are easier on your wallet. Ohuhu Alcohol Markers are fantastic. Pair that up with a Strathmore Marker Pad, and you're ready to rock and roll!

If you're more interested in digital art, there's a bit more money you may have to spend. There's two standard ways people make digital art. An iPad or tablet with some type of stylus pen, or a computer with a drawing tablet. I've used both. While I prefer my iPad, I know many great artists who prefer working from their computers. Procreate is the best illustrating app I've ever used. Unlike Adobe Illustrator, you only need to purchase it one time. For a drawing tablet, I prefer Hioun. There's many to choose from with different prices. You will have to install drawing software. Inkspace is great, and the best part? IT'S FREE!

There's pros and cons to each one. Do some research and decide which seems better for you!
